The first part of the Kodokan Judo Summer Course 2026 began on 11 July and will continue until 18 July. Kuma Dojo members are taking part alongside dan-grade judoka from different places, studying seven kata in an intensive eight-day programme.
For Kuma Dojo, this is more than a course. Kuma's training at the Kodokan is part of the foundation of teaching at our dojo. To study at the Kodokan with Kuma is to return to the source of judo, and it carries a feeling a little like coming home.
The first part focuses on kata, helping dan holders deepen their understanding of judo principles, etiquette, instruction and long-term study. It begins with Itsutsu-no-Kata, followed by Nage-no-Kata, Katame-no-Kata, Kime-no-Kata, Ju-no-Kata, Kodokan Goshin-jutsu and Koshiki-no-Kata.
The Kodokan states that kata is essential study for dan holders and an important part of promotion standards. This eight-day programme gives Kuma Dojo members the chance to revisit at judo's birthplace what they practise consistently in Hong Kong, then bring that learning home to the dojo.
